Updates

2010 August 31

Hi everyone!

Tomorrow it all begins! Inge Hoonte will start workshops with participants at Art City and I’ll be working with Collin to start installing the Showing Up, Speaking Out “staging ground” at aceartinc. After picking up a bicycle this morning to get around town more easily, Inge has been working away on “behind the scenes” aspects for her workshops, and I’ve been back and forth between meetings and errands also in preparation for the launch.

Here are some details:

Inge arrived yesterday so she, Cam from Art City, and I met at Cousin’s for dinner and to discuss further details concerning her schedule of activities. Inge had a ton of ideas during our last Skype meeting, and she had even more to share yesterday! It was so exciting. No, make that *is*. It *IS* exciting! We think the kids at Art City are going to have a blast thinking about recreation and how it affects the experience of city life.

Actually, two awesome people arrived in Winnipeg yesterday. Matt is also here now and is all ready to take on the role SUSO social media expert and all ’round facilitator! We met for lunch at Stella’s to get further acquainted and to talk about the schedule for the upcoming week. Matt shared a great idea to help circulate news related to SUSO activities, but I’ll leave it to him to share details =-)

What else? Well, aside from a great meeting with Amber-Dawn from Urban Shaman Gallery, that’s probably all there is worth reporting.  You’ll see the fantastic paint colour selected for the SUSO staging ground tomorrow ;-)

More inspiration/overlaps: Red Tent 2010

2010 August 30

Red Tent 2010 is a nation-wide project in support of Bill-304, which calls for a federal housing strategy. This bill is going into its third reading in October and, if it passes, it will significantly affect the struggle to ensure all people in Canada have access to decent, safe housing.

Housing is a matter that affects all levels of community life: national, provincial and municipal. It has been included as a subject for discussion and action through Showing Up, Speaking Out because each municipality needs to identify and address regional conditions while working to involve and support local citizens.

The work being undertaken through the Red Tent campaign is inspiring on so many levels, but a reason I want to mention it here is because it is employs a distinctive visual element to draw attention to, and consolidate energy around, a discussion that needs to stay top of mind in order for change to happen. The red tent is a reminder to decision makers that people care about their fellow citizens and demand serious action ensuring the right to housing. The red tents that have started to, and will continue to, appear across the country creates something we can all point to as a visual indicator of support for the right to housing. It can not be ignored.

I don’t know a great deal about the image below, but I am very excited by it, and would love to find out more. If anyone has more information, please post details below. I found the image on the front page of Red Tent 2010’s website (http://www.redtents.org/), and see that it is a large gathering of people in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery, clearly rallying together to bring an end to homelessness.

I understand Red Tents are going to start appearing in Winnipeg soon. You can get involved by sponsoring a tent and placing it in a location that will spark attention in support of housing for all. Visit http://www.redtents.org/ to find out how.

What additional actions can we Winnipeggers take to make visual the critical need for housing for all? Join with Tomas Jonsson from September 13 – 18 to start brainstorming and doing!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Showing Up, Speaking Out offers Winnipeggers unique opportunities to engage with civic issues that matter

2010 August 11
by Milena

Winnipeg (August 11, 2010)

Beginning September 3, citizens from across Winnipeg are invited to participate in an experimental project that involves collaborating with local, national, and international artists to develop and present temporary artworks in public spaces throughout the city in response to various subjects relevant to municipal life.

Showing Up, Speaking Out recognizes the importance of art to everyday experience and finds it can support the right of all people to act within their communities by generating creative means for expressing values, sharing input, and building solidarity.

As such, Showing Up, Speaking Out seeks to highlight the critical role of artists as public thinkers and social communicators capable of inspiring new ways of engaging with the world. Showing Up, Speaking Out also seeks to enhance relationships between artists and other community members by facilitating opportunities to collectively explore the notion of public space as a valid forum for thoughtful idea exchange.

The staging ground for this project will be local artist run centre, aceartinc. (2nd floor, 290 McDermot Avenue). From this place, citizens and artists will work together to determine the form and content of artistic actions related to pre-determined themes (i.e. housing and poverty). After brainstorming ideas, they will make props or other items as required for their interventions and later present their work outdoors. aceartinc.’s Flux Gallery will serve a site for exhibiting content related to each artistic action (i.e. used props, photos and videos, and messages to other participants). The gallery will also offer a venue for participants to discuss the potential impact of their actions, and reflect on their experiences working together to express ideas about life in Winnipeg, and the kind of city they would like to shape together.

Activities associated with this project will be supported through regular blogging and an online forum at http://www.showingupspeakingout.ca. A free e-publication including contributions from participants and responses from local writers will be available a few months after the project ends on October 5.

Participating artists include: Inge Hoonte (Netherlands/USA) on recreation, Tomas Jonsson (Calgary) on housing and poverty, Deborah Kelly (Australia) on diversity, Kristin Nelson (Winnipeg) on accessibility, and Stop Violence Against Aboriginal Women Action Group including collaborating artist Leah Decter (Winnipeg).

This project is made possible thanks to partnerships with many local organizations: aceartinc., Art City, Institute for Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of Winnipeg, Mentoring Artists for Women’s Art, newinnipeg.net, RAW: Gallery of Architecture and Design, Social Planning Council of Winnipeg, The University of Winnipeg’s Students’ Association, Urban Shaman: Contemporary Aboriginal Art, and Video Pool Media Arts Centre.

Generous financial support for this project has been made available by the Canada Council for the Arts and the Winnipeg Arts Council.

Press releases will be issued throughout the duration of this project to share details about each element. A preliminary calendar of events can be found at http://www.showingupspeakingout.ca/get-involved.
